HISTORY ASPECTS: The Boeing KC-135 Stratotanker is one of the most important aerial refueling aircraft in U.S. Air Force history. Developed from the Boeing 367-80 prototype, the KC-135 entered service in the late 1950s and transformed American military aviation by allowing fighters, bombers, transports, and other aircraft to remain airborne for much longer periods. Its swept-wing design and four jet engines gave it considerably greater performance than the piston-powered tankers it replaced, while its flying-boom refueling system became a defining feature of U.S. airpower. KC-135T 59-1471 was one of the aircraft that served with the Washington Air National Guard, supporting the state's air-refueling mission and the wider global requirements of the U.S. Air Force. The KC-135T designation reflected modifications that gave the aircraft improved engines, avionics, and operational capabilities compared with earlier KC-135 configurations. Aircraft such as 59-1471 routinely supported training sorties, long-range deployments, air-defense missions, and exercises, providing the airborne fuel needed to extend the reach of combat aircraft far beyond their normal operating range. Throughout its long service life, the KC-135 fleet has been involved in virtually every major U.S. military operation since the aircraft entered service. Stratotankers supported combat operations during the Vietnam War, Operation Desert Storm, Operation Allied Force in the Balkans, Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan, and Operation Iraqi Freedom, as well as numerous other contingency operations and international exercises. Washington Air National Guard KC-135 crews contributed to this global mission by providing fuel and logistical support that enabled fighter and bomber forces to conduct extended-range operations. Although the tanker rarely receives the same attention as the aircraft it supports, its ability to keep combat aircraft airborne has made it a fundamental component of American air power. This 1:200 scale model of USAF KC-135T Stratotanker 59-1471 captures the distinctive swept-wing profile, four-engine configuration, and Washington Air National Guard markings of this legendary aerial refueling aircraft, making it an excellent addition to any collection focused on U.S. military aviation, Cold War history, and modern airpower.
