HISTORY ASPECTS: The Lockheed F-35B Lightning II, Bureau Number 169623, serves with Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 242 (VMFA-242) “Bats,” based at Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni, Japan. In 2024, this fifth-generation stealth multirole fighter was regularly seen flying in its so-called “beast mode”—a configuration maximizing its external weapon loadout for high-intensity combat operations. VMFA-242 plays a key role in the Indo-Pacific region, providing forward-deployed airpower and rapid-response capability as tensions rise over territorial disputes and strategic rivalries in the South China Sea and Taiwan Strait. The F-35B variant is distinct for its short takeoff and vertical landing (STOVL) capabilities, making it a perfect fit for Marine Corps expeditionary operations. Since transitioning to the F-35B in 2020, VMFA-242 has participated in numerous joint exercises and operational patrols under the U.S.-Japan security alliance, enhancing regional deterrence. While the squadron hasn’t been involved in large-scale conflict as of 2024, its deployments and training missions simulate combat readiness for near-peer threats, ensuring the U.S. maintains tactical superiority in any future confrontation. The “beast mode” loadout demonstrated by aircraft 169623 at Iwakuni highlights the flexibility of the F-35B. Normally flown with internal weapons to preserve stealth, the jet can also be configured with six external pylons carrying bombs and air-to-air missiles when stealth is less critical. This configuration showcases its ability to shift from stealth penetration to full-force strike operations—a key feature in the evolving landscape of multi-domain warfare. VMFA-242, with its storied history dating back to WWII and the jet’s cutting-edge capability, symbolizes the fusion of heritage and future warfare. This 1:72 scale model “beast mode” configuration, offers a dynamic snapshot of modern Marine Corps airpower. With meticulously rendered details, full external weapons loadout, and authentic squadron markings, it makes an eye-catching addition for collectors and enthusiasts of contemporary military aviation.
