This brand-new Tamiya plastic model kit depicts the Israeli Army Tiran 5 tank at 1/35 scale. It comes in unopened, vintage-style packaging with colorful decal artwork and is an officially licensed product. Parts are molded in Light Brown unless otherwise indicated; small parts are chrome plated. Paint and cement are required and not included.
The kit includes commander and loader torso figures (2 total) and markings to recreate the tank in its 1980 form. Details include a realistic storage box on the turret’s right side, water tanks, other auxiliary equipment, a modified main gun, added M2 heavy machine guns, crew machine guns and a mortar mount on the vehicle’s left side.
During the 6-Day War of 1967, the Israeli Defense Force (IDF) captured numerous T-55 tanks from Arab countries and modified them for service as Tiran 5 tanks. Many had their 100mm gun replaced with a 105mm version and received added weaponry, including an M2 heavy machine gun on the main gun mantlet and individual machine guns for the commander and loader. Turret storage boxes helped with friend/foe identification.
Tiran 5 tanks saw action during the Yom Kippur War in October of 1973 and continued in front-line service until the early 1980s. They were later distributed to forces across the world, including the South Lebanese Army.
