HISTORY ASPECTS: The Sikorsky SH-3G Sea King BuNo 148987/AB 011 served with Helicopter Combat Support Squadron 2 (HC-2) “Fleet Angels” during a pivotal era of U.S. Navy rotary-wing operations in the 1970s. Developed by Sikorsky Aircraft, the Sikorsky SH-3 Sea King was originally designed for anti-submarine warfare, shipboard utility missions, and search-and-rescue operations. The SH-3G variant was a utility conversion optimized for vertical replenishment (VERTREP), personnel transport, and ship support roles, removing some combat sensors in favor of increased flexibility and lift capability. Operating from the deck of the USS John F. Kennedy (CVA-67), the SH-3G “Fleet Angels” played a vital role in carrier strike group logistics and at-sea support missions. HC-2 detachments were responsible for delivering supplies, mail, and personnel between ships, as well as conducting search-and-rescue and emergency medevac operations when required. In the busy operational tempo of the Cold War-era U.S. Navy, these helicopters ensured that carrier battle groups could remain deployed for extended periods without returning to port. Although the SH-3 Sea King family did not typically engage in direct combat, it supported major U.S. naval operations and Cold War deployments that often occurred in tense global environments. During the broader context of the Cold War, Sea Kings like 148987 supported fleet readiness in the Atlantic and Mediterranean, operating alongside carrier groups that projected American naval power worldwide. Earlier variants of the Sea King also saw service in the Vietnam War, where the type was widely used for search-and-rescue missions recovering downed aircrew under combat conditions. This 1:72 scale model is a finely detailed tribute to the workhorse helicopter of the U.S. Navy’s carrier fleet. Featuring authentic markings and the classic shipboard configuration, it captures the essential support role that made the Sea King indispensable to naval aviation operations. Perfect for collectors of Cold War naval aviation and carrier air wing history, this replica is a distinctive and meaningful display piece honoring at-sea logistics and rescue excellence.
